What’s In My Literacy Small Group Caddy?

Wondering what tools to keep in your literacy small group caddy? These are a few of the things that I am constantly reaching for during small group literacy instruction, so I keep them all handy in a little caddy that I can easily move around. Take a peek at my faves below!

Decodable Sentence Rings

These rings are great in a fluency center, but they’re also perfect fluency practice for small groups! Each ring focuses on a different phonics skill, and the sentences are decodable (building upon each other as the skills increase). You can grab these Decodable Sentence Fluency Cards in my TPT Store.

Reading Comprehension Bookmarks & Mini Anchor Charts

These are just two pieces of my Reading Tool Kit. The comprehension bookmarks are great for having students talk through different comprehension skills after they finish reading books/passages in small groups. The mini anchor charts focus on a huge variety of skills, and there is likely to be one in there for every single phonics skill, comprehension skill, and grammar skill that you teach! Find the Reading Tool Kits in my TPT Store.

Spacemen, Google-Eyed Finger Rings, and Line Helpers

Re-reading the title of this section has me giggling- only teachers could read the words “spacemen, google-eyed finger rings, and line helpers” and not bat an eye.

Spacemen are used to help students create appropriately sized spaces in between words in their writing. They are found in my Reading Tool Kits.

Google-eyed finger rings are for students who are still tracking using their finger. I found mine HERE.

Line helpers help students eliminate the rest of the text to focus on a single line at a time. I found mine HERE.

Reading Tool Kit

Most of the things in my small group caddy come from my Reading Tool Kit. It’s one of my most-used items and also one of my most popular TPT resources (you can also find the math kits here).

Each student has their own Reading Tool Kit that they keep in their desk and bring back to small group instruction. It includes tons of helpers, and materials that they may need while reading or writing.

Mini Student Sound Wall

This mini student sound wall is found in my Sound Wall Pack, and students also have them in their desks for personal use. I keep one at my small group table (and it is also hanging on the wall) so that I can reference it right in front of students (without them having to look back and forth between the wall and whatever we are doing).

Orthographic Mapping Mats

These come in handy when we are working on decoding words of a specific phonics skill, or if we are reading a book/passage and come to a tricky word that we need to map to decode. I use a few different mats- some from my Mapping Mat resource, and some from my Roll and Map resource (this one doubles as a literacy center). Both mat options come with tons of choices.

Let me know if you end up putting any of these resources in your small group literacy caddy too! I would love to hear how they are working for you and your students!
