Using Digital Math and Literacy Centers

I love paper centers just as much as the next person because I love the hands-on approach to learning. What I don’t love is spending hours of my personal time cutting and laminating hundreds of math centers, just to have to redo them all in a few years because of wear and tear.

That’s why I do a mixture of both! Having a digital center option saves me tons of time, kids love it, and I can use the instant student performance data to help track student growth!

What Does a Digital Center Option Look Like?

In the photo above, you can see my Math Center Digital Rotation board. I love using a digital rotation board during math and literacy centers because I am able to run my small groups much more effectively while the board runs and switches to the next slide of rotations on its own. You can find my Math Center Digital Rotation Board HERE, and I have a similar one for literacy centers that works in the exact same way and you can find it HERE.

During Math and Literacy Centers, one of my centers during both times is Seesaw. I have created over 250 digital centers that are pre-loaded into Seesaw that students love because they feel like they are playing a fun digital game! Not only has this made center time super engaging, but this has also made center prep extremely easy for me, since I have one less center to cut, laminate, and prep each time I switch out our centers.

Having Students Log In to Seesaw is a Piece of Cake!

I know the struggle when it comes to having kindergarteners or first graders log in to apps. It usually takes them ten thousand years to type in their log in info, and then by the time the center round is over, they’ve done a grand total of 6 minutes in the app. Those days are GONE with this hack!

I screenshot my Seesaw class QR code and I place it on a paper document that I typed up that just says “SEESAW.” I have this placed in multiple areas around the room. When it’s time for students to complete their Seesaw center during that round of rotations, they click the Seesaw app, scan one of the QR codes around the room, and click their name. They’re logged in within a matter of seconds!

If you don’t use a class code but you use individual codes instead, you could print and tape those QR codes into the unfinished work folders of students, or on their desks. Just find somewhere easily accessible for your students to scan themselves into the app quickly so that they can get started.

How Do These Work?

Each of my Seesaw Digital Center Resources come with step by step guides with a how-to video, tips and tricks for teachers, and practice activities for you to assign to your students. It’s super easy to assign one of my Seesaw Digital Centers to your students, to see how, you can CLICK HERE to watch a short video on how to do this.

After it’s assigned, students can get on their device during their Seesaw Center time, complete their activity, and it immediately sends it back to me so that I can grade it or use it as performance data. It’s so nice to have instant data at your fingertips!
